So last night while viewing the movie, I noticed the controller looks to be an early model Futaba FB (RIPMAX) from the 70's. Round chrome controls with added lights and a translucent red toggle switch. They didn't really show it in the movie much, but it's interesting to note.

Here's a decent pic of the transmitter that was posted by ghosbustersOC on Instagram. ^_^

I had to take some time off, but I'm back working on the RTV.

Here are the latest pictures. I see the shocks are now too far from the body (facepalm) so I'll have to fix that.
as an FYI, other than the Traxxas donor car, the rear red light cover, the aluminum handle, flashlight innards, and the rear connector, everything was(or can be) 3d printed.
I did use aluminum and a real Cal-r resistor, but 3d printed versions are pretty good as well.
The door opening mechanism has changed 3 times since I last posted. I now use servos at the rear end only, the front door pushrods are for show only. (it works well and takes up a lot less space!)

Next is figuring out where to put the innards. The laser smoke show is coming along, but I need to figure out balancing the mirror on the fan since it rattles up a storm. My new SLA printer did a nice job of the fan blades.
I will post pictures of the inside when I get there.

That build is looking so sweet. The details are absolutely amazing. I think you have it, just a few more fine tweaks.

Looks like the chassis is indeed a Traxxas HOSS VXL 4X4. These are the best snapshots I could grab on my cell during my second viewing of the movie. Just wait....Adam Savage will do a prop video soon and we'll get all the meaty details about it!

Great pictures!
I can’t wait for Adam’s review.😃.
I am interested in what others see as flaws in this design, everything is able to be tweaked.
What I see is that I cut the chassis in a different place (front to back) than the original, but we both had to move the steering servo to the other side.

Issues I know of and will fix
1-Shock supports sticking out of the trap are a little too far out.
2-The philips screw on side of the handle stem is too low.
3-handle needs a little switch like thing that sticks out the top hole- designed, but not printed yet
4- rear antenna seems to small, and maybe not properly placed .
5- no big front bumper- the small one looks right, but there is a larger version that goes over top, it looks to be aluminum.

Anything else?

This is probably going to come off as I'm being the "um, actually" guy, but I'm reasonably sure the base rc car was a Traxxas Stampede not a Hoss. The section that makes up the rear chassis/rear diff skid plate is a shared part between the two, but those are definately Stampede rear control arms with the shock guards removed. I've been following these builds for a while and am working on my own. Unfortunately I bought a used Rustler to start with which is too wide so I've been doing plenty of research.

I feel as a Mod I should just say that while the enthusiasm to document a prop and find out how it all goes together is understandable, don't run the risk of getting banned from the cinema by taking a few quick snaps with your phone.

Thanks D1gger,
The adapters are:
Hex Drive Adaptors, RC Car Wheel Hex Driver 1/10 to 1/8 12mm to 17mm 30mm Extension Lengthen Hex Adapter

Then I paint the retainer screw(bolt) black and sand the nut to be silver to get the desired effect.

Who knew? It turns out the chassis for the RTV is actually the Traxxas Stampede 4x4. Lucky for me that’s the one I used.

I got this discussion from a Facebook group.

Well as nice as this is to see the picture of the real prop, I have just found "several" issues to fix with my current design.
My plan is -as close as I can- but within the limits of actually finishing it. :)

My overall length is 8 or 9mm too long. :( the flashlight up front has small holes and has grooves rather than ridges. -it's a khaki green, not black and the mount does have a grub screw. (this is good, I found mine was a bit loose)
The rear box cutout for the suspension that I made, is the wrong shape, the front screws on the box cover are in the wrong place (close though)
The front bar graph looks to be sealed off, and the led hole is on the other side.
There are 2 screws in the top that I missed (easy fix) and the servo arms have a larger slot that I made. Too bad I just reprinted almost all of these parts for other reasons yesterday... More work to do!

After seeing the front flashlight up close, I think it's painted resin. If you look at the wear marks, the paint rubbed off, that isn't aluminum or rubber.

I've updated my design so it's now very close. Just need some Army green to paint it.

Hey Far451! I tried messaging you on Facebook but didn't see a reply. I'd love to pick your brain on your chassis modifications and scaling as I've been investing a lot of time into this prop recently. Or I can just post it here if you'd prefer?

Great build!

This build is looking so good! I was wondering what was the part you used for the connector on the rear box of the trap?

Also very interested if you ever made the files you used for this available!

The rear connector was identified by GBFans, amphenol 16s, it’s a screw in female 6 pin(now that we have more pictures- I have a 2 pin in the last picture I posted.)

I will be making the files available in some form, I’m not sure how, but maybe a small fee(and I mean small), I’ve been at this for months and have spent a fortune on PLA. :) -I’m at rev 17 of the rear box… (maybe I’m just a crappy designer..🥴)Admittedly I love doing this type of thing, so it isn’t hard work, just a fun challenge. I hope to be done in the next week or two. So many new pictures have been posted since the movie’s release, and that takes a lot of guesswork out of the equation.

Thanks for the info for the connector.

Also would be more than willing to pay you for all the hard work you've done on these files! They have been looking really good and I can use the measurements from what you've made to make up some metal side plates/ top plates for the rear box as well.

As an update, I’ve redesigned (small changes to most large changes to a couple) almost every single part since the new pictures were released. I’ve been printing day and night to get things finalized.

I am getting more please with the results every day. It isn’t much to show in pictures yet, but here are a couple of things.
The whole chassis was moved forward 1cm so the shocks now sit at the correct angle to the supports.
Flashlights redesigned - again
Rear “antenna” redesigned” (I like it!)
Door opening mechanism (servos)moved to the front (as seen on the afterlife ghost trap)
Rear box extended a bit, handle support change to make it more sturdy and use existing screws.
New screws added at the base of the chassis as seen in the pictures.
I’m hoping to supply some unpainted pictures in a couple of days, then I’ll go to town with weathering!

Excited to see your progress Far451, keep us updated. I would pay as well for plans on your build. Any chance you could share those pics of the prop at the Hollywood Museum. I'm dying to see more of that controller setup.

No worries Kingpin, I had asked the Regal manager if it was ok and was advised that I was good as long as I had no flash or made noise. She didn't seem all that concerned with the premise. Probably could have filmed the entire movie without anyone caring, but that wasn't the point. :)

HI Hcrank,

I am with you, I can't wait to release the files!

But, and there is a big butt. But that's another story.
I am working (every day) to test and assemble and re-test each file so that they are easy to print and make a good product that most people can put together. Unfortunately, one of my printers in on the fritz so it's been slower going.

I have the doors working to my satisfaction with one servo for each door. It's still a bit of work on the hardware side to make the control arms look and work right.
My plan is to release the files ( I do feel bad releasing them at a cost, but I've spent a small fortune on PLA and resin developing them) and tutorial videos like I did for the Keymaster helmet -a complete guide with parts lists and a list of required tools. Keymaster helmet assembly video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mAlLdk5uZs

For the purists out there, I bet the RTV uses mostly imperial screw (#6-32 and #4-40) but since the base chassis (Traxxas Stampede 4x4) uses metric I will be using metric screws. The good news for the purists is that plastic needs to be tapped anyway, so you can use the equivalent imperial screws if you wish without any changes to the files. I am of course willing to work with folks and make the strictly "imperial" version parts list. (I really wanted to slip the words Storm trooper in there.)
Thanks everyone for your patience, I am pedaling as fast as I can.

I used the similar axle/wheel adapters that Far linked off amazon, so pretty sure they'll work on most of the 1:10&1:12 RC chassis with similar wheelbase to what we need on the RTV. I didn't mess with recoloring anything though.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z9V93XB
I had to buy a pack of the correct translucent button covers, so I do have a few spares if folks want to only buy what they need.
The correct CB antenna to add I also grabbed from amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08G5B564W
The correct flat long and short switches I got off amazon too, but you can find them on ebay as well.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G1I8DWQ
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09J4BVDMR
I got correct looking vintage panel lights, and do have a couple spares depending if some folks who already contacted me aren't snagging them from my bunch.
The small ribbon cable I have is spare off spirit pack redo, so it's not the exact correct color sequence, but will do for my build.
