Many of the reviews for Afterlife seem to start with the assumption that nostalgia is "bad." Where the heck is this coming from? Is this just an excuse to give the film a bad review. Or is this some missguided "intelectual" fad among the snooty out of touch internet writers?

I just ignore Critics as they're paid to be unpleasant people who generally are miserable and hate things older than they are. It doesn't matter if it's movies or video games most of these folks have no real interest in the movie/game. On the other end is the people who kiss butt because if they don't the people making the film/game won't let them see it early and there'll be no revenue from a review. I'm fairly certain reviewers fall under "foul smelling free-roaming vapors".
