I've been watching the old Leonard Nimoy narrated series In Search of... from the late 70s and early 80s. Even thought most of the show's content ranges from silly nonsense to "batshit insane" it puts Ghostbusters in the cultural context of it's era, something I never got as a kid. For instance the episode I'm watching now is about esp. They interview several researchers one was a psychologist studying esp at UC Davis. Honestly the guys getting a grant to study parapsychology at Columbia doesn't seem particularly implausible now. Even Venkman's experiment in theory isn't unlikely.
