The movie An American Werewolf In London was in my opinion a good movie, but not all that scary, at least not for a werewolf movie. The Howling and Silver Bullet were both scarier than AAWIL and if you ask me they both make for good werewolf movies if you want something truly scary. AAWIL on the other hand, was in many ways more funny than scary. I would almost put it in the same category as Ghostbusters in terms of being a comedy movie.

Probably one of the best werewolf movies is Dog Soldiers. An American Werewolf in London is a classic, but it maybe suffers a little from it aiming more towards being a thriller... Perhaps tying too much to be like Jaws when maybe it should've leaned more towards The Fly or Dawn of the Dead.
