Is there a visually viable *alternative* to an A.L.I.C.E. frame?

I bought one of these for my Spirit Halloween pack (I'd love a full size but I lack crafting talent or the several hundred dollars needed to buy one) to make it look a bit more accurate. It. Is. Agony. I can't wear it. Specifically, these damned things. I'm 6'4 and have a broad torso. So those things end up pressing into the soft area of my lower back. I wore the frame by itself for about five minutes and was in considerable pain for the next half hour. I don' think it will work for someone my size. Has anyone found a viable alternative?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but you're saying the kidney pad isn't preventing the lower pack piece from pressing against your body? Are the mounting straps used to attach the kidney pad to the pack tight? The picture makes the pad look like it's loose, once it's taught it should completely cover any lower metal parts.

that might be the solution. I tightened it and it was still very uncomfortable, but certainly MUCH better than it was. I'm looking at getting a better, thicker kidney pad.
