Here are some phrases that went through my head while reading these updates....

"Oh yeah that's a great idea!"
"Yes I should have done it like that on my build"
"Argh yes why didn't I think of that!?"
"OOOO smooth"
"Ok i promise to do that on my next build"

Yeah I know, happens to me all the time when I check out your threads. ;) Still flattering, though. :D

Here's tonight's update! (I'm not responsible if there are two. Things are really rolling. :))

Image

Since the goop that holds the nuts is dry, I started by adding the two brass threaded inserts that will hold the front plate in place. Yes, I'm sick of those things too. And I'm not done. Oooooh no.

Image

Boom! A dry fitting that evolved into a final fitting. ;) Really don't have to take those off to finish this thing, so here's the final look of the front of my trap. Hey! It's the first cosmetic plate I apply! :D

Image

Next: the installation of the bottom of the trap on the main body. Here the kit calls for epoxy and wood screws. That simply won't do. Since screws aren't accurate down there anyway, I thought I'd use screws that are a little more GB. So I installed some more brass threaded inserts (I know) and I'll install the plates with 6-32 sockets screws.

Image

At the same time I fitted the battery box on the main body. The kit called for more epoxy, and the fourth wood screw would, well, screw into the battery's bottom. More inserts! More!!! One 6-32 for the bottom, and two for the side, which will be screwed in place from inside the battery box. Should be though aplenty. ;)

Image

I almost forgot: I also did this with my teardrop knob, with a little stripe of white vinyl. It's even more accurate now! Yaaay! :P

I think I smelled too much goop. I need to take a break. ;) To be continued!

Yeah, I still have a mini update in me before bed. ;)

Image

Added a blown LED in the hole, and opaque plastic in the window, to hide the fact that I don't have a light kit for this thing. Had to do something about that gaping hole. ;) Now that the front box is ready to be installed, that means that the doors are ready too. Speaking of which...

Image

..Here's the obligatory cartridge shot with the doors on. :D No, I only took that picture to show you that I replaced the incorrect socket head screws with button head screws on the front cosmetic plate. Crisis averted! :P

OK that's it for real, now. Final assembly will probably be tomorrow night, so stay tuned!

Stop talking about my knobs, you're making me blush! ;) Seriously, thanks guys. :D

OK, final assembly time! Hang on to your hats, this'll go fast. :P

Image

Started by marking and drilling a hole for the screw that will hold the front box.

Image

Then I screwed the front box in place. I used the slotted screw that came with the kit. I know that it isn't accurate to the particular trap I'm trying to replicate, but I kinda like this detail. ;)

Image

Then I screwed in the bottom plate, using 6-32 socket screws like I said earlier.

Image

Then came the handle, held in place with two big-ass Phillips screws, straight into the resin...

Image

...Then the battery box, with one 6-32 screw from the bottom, and two from the inside...

Image

...Then the battery box cover... You may notice that I finally glued in the red cap. ;)

Image

Then I installed the left side, with its 80 screws holding it in place...

Image

...Then the right side, with 150 screws this time. Whew!

So the trap's pretty much done. I have to add that, at an undetermined point in the final assembly, I may have put the trap on the ground, gave it a good push, and laughed like an idiot for 2 minutes. That may have happened.

I'll take better pictures of the trap later, because my camera is pissing me off (had to take something like 90 pics to get these 8) and I'm planning to weather it with fuller's earth. Besides, I'm a little spent after all that screwing.

What? ;)

Thanks for the kind words guys, it's really appreciated. :D
Kingpin wrote:That is one beautiful Trap... I especially love the use of threaded inserts. How easy are those to come by in the States?

How easy was it to drill the doors to fit the hinge pieces (and later the caphead screws)?
It's my understanding that in the States, you can simply go into a hardware store and buy some. However, up here in Canada, it's a little more complicated. I got mine on eBay. ;) Bought 2 packs of 12 each of 4-40 and 6-32, and I almost used them all. :O

I cheated a little on the hinges, because the doors came with them installed. However I had to rebuild and adjust the doors around them, so that was a little tricky. Had to make sure that the inserts didn't come off or something. ;)
nick-a-tron wrote:FLAWLESS!! Hats off to you Mike!
Hehehe, thanks. :D There's still a few flaws, though, some things that I saw only when it was complete. Example: both the doors and the teardrop knob are a little loose. Nothing a few washers won't fix, though. ;)

More like invisible washers. Check this out.

You know those little gaskets that we get when we buy Nycoil banjos? The one we throw out? Well I didn't, and I remembered that they would be perfect to seal my doors. Here they are, to show the scale.

Image

Removed the doors, put one of those on each brass hinge (they're exactly the right size and everything) then I reinstalled the doors. Now they stay closed, and when I open them they stay in the position I put them. Problem solved. :)

Image

Then I removed the teardrop's side of the trap and added a 1/4" washer on the pot shaft. That way the shaft will stick out less, and I can install the knob closer to the body.

Image

So now the knob still turns, but it's a lot tighter. Problem #2 solved. :D

Image

When I was throwing away the remnants of the trap kit (boxes, bags, etc...) I came across this: a little printed out display for those without a light kit like me. I installed it, it's pretty and it'll do the trick until I decide to do something about it. ;)

So! Now my trap is REALLY complete, except for the weathering. I promised you better pictures, here they are. ;)

I'd like to add that at no point during this shoot, did I put the trap on the ground, gave it a good push, stomped on the pedal and laughed like a maniac. That did not happen.

OK so that's it for this prop! If I ever manage to weather it, I'll take better pics with a better camera. Maybe when my pack is complete it'll give me the kick in the ass that I need to do it. ;)

You have to really look for them, most hardware type stores don't have them. You have to look at surplus stores and fastener stores and then they are quite hard to find. I've only managed to get them by collecting them over the years when I find them, although one of the stores near me does now have a very good selection of them.

Absolutely amazing trap Mike, another one to add to my "one of the best I've seen list". I swear this past year has been the best year for traps in some time it's just one outstanding trap after another.

Wow, guys. I'm a bit overwhelmed here. I wasn't expecting this. Thanks for the great words, everybody. It's really appreciated. :D

So I kinda weathered my trap. I say kinda, because I used just a little bit of fuller's earth (I'm starting slow, never used this thing before ;)) So now the trap has about the same weathering job as my pedal, mainly to make them match (in the last set of photos the trap was waaay too clean :P) I like the new weathering job a lot, even if it's reeeal subtle (it's really hard to see in pics, mainly it dulls the paint job a little and makes it dusty, but in person it instantly makes the prop seem "used") I took new pictures nonetheless, mainly because it was sunny outside and I could use the natural light. :D Here you go!

OK big update for the New Year! A few weeks ago I contacted Christian from Jupiter Electronics so that he'd make me a custom light kit for my trap. I got the kit, but I postponed the installation indefinitely, for fear of screwing up my trap, which was considered complete at the time. But tonight I finally gathered up the courage to dismantle it for some major surgery. Good news: the operation was a success! The light kit is installed and functional!

The kit that Chris came up with is based on his proton gun kit, to match the theory that both the trap and the gun had the same bar graph. So it's an 18 square LEDs graph that goes up, with a white LED that lights up when the graph is full, and a red LED that flashes. The kit even has two settings for speed, controlled by a jumper. Chris made an incredible job. :)

The joy of being able to take good pictures at night continues. Here's my trap with the light kit!
