So Miss Pickles has seen Afterlife... and as a cat could not care less. The agony! :P

Also there was a 3rd one, the last image of Miss Pickles is meme worthy. heh heh.

Davideverona wrote: September 27th, 2020, 6:26 am If I recall correctly, Ivan Reitman himself said that the animated movie (wich was very well into development before the Afterlife announcement) and the animated series were both put on hold to see how well the "new live action movie" will fare.
No, just the animated series Ecto Force.

The animated movie too.
Oh, you're saying if Afterlife gets delayed again then so does the animated movie, right?

Well sure, while the animated movie never had a concrete release date, the release of the it is dependent on when Afterlife comes out. But there's a difference, Ecto Force is on the shelf - that's been confirmed. Whether work is still being actively done on the animated movie or it's been put on hold is unknown.

Reading between the lines here, it might be more accurate to say that the development of the animated movie has been put on hold. We don't even know what it would be beyond a few vague rumors and hearsay. I think it's possible that they haven't really settled on what it will be either, and they're not going to decide until they know whether or not the live-action movies are going to be viable again.

At 2017 SDCC Ivan Reitman said that they were developing various projects after the reboot: an animated movie, an animated series and a new live action movie.

The animated series (Ecto Force) was set in the future and involved Ghostbusters from various dimensions.

The live action movie was very well into development, with a director already signed on, and was meant to tell a story by a ghost point of view. It was set in the original universe.

The new live action: "You have seen nothing yet" (little smirk).

Then he added that the live action was scheduled to come out after the animated projects. I think that, after ATC underperformed, they were still undecided if they had to go back to the original continuity or re-reboot it and animation was a cheap way to keep the franchise alive and make some money.

What changed their plans? Jason Reitman.

He wrote a movie without telling anyone and Sony was blown away by it.

The script is so good that they put on hold every project they had and reconsidered the live action route, seeing how many fans clamored for the original Ghostbusters to come back on the silver screen.

A few details are bit off there. Ecto Force was going follow Ghostbusters from all over the world. Not other dimensions. ;) I do believe that the Ecto Force idea is the closest thing to Dan Aykroyd’s original concept for Ghostbusters. Like in Dan’s original draft it was set in the future and yes it focused on one particular team of Ghostbusters, but in the world that Dan made there were many Ghostbuster teams around the world and there was dimension hopping as well. Then Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman decided that the story may flow much better if the idea was a bit more grounded, set in contemporary time, and made it a going into business story.

Now I am not saying anything that anyone here doesn’t already know. ;) LOL!

However I am glad they went the route they did, because now that the franchise is now well established they can be a bit less grounded and just build on the lore. I am really confident that Afterlife is going to be something real special. If it opens doors for an animated movie, an animated series, and more comic stories. That will be enough for me. :):):)

Bison256 wrote: September 27th, 2020, 2:45 pm Richard, we all love the franchise but you need to realize after 1991 Ghostbusters was a dead from sony's perspective. If a third movie had come out in the 90s than things would have been different, but it didn't. Afterlife still might change that, we'll see in March.
That’s exactly my point. Exactly my point. It was dead to them. But guess what? It wasn’t dead to me, wasn’t dead to Real Ghostbusters fans or Extreme Ghostbusters fans. When “Return of the Jedi” came out in 1983, Star Wars was out of focus for the majority of the population. But Lucasfilm still released books and video games & made millions of new fans in the process.

Sony could’ve been stoking the embers by releasing books, video games, a new cartoon series every so often. That’s pretty basic stuff. Sony had zero presence at any cons until recently. How about a major theatrical re-release in 1999 or 2004? Just like E.T or Star Wars or The Excorist had? I don’t know. Anything! Anything to keep the embers burning.

How about a blu ray release with the Animated Series’ and the movies together in a single package? What about a straight to DVD animated film like WB had with Batman The Animated Series?

There’s so many things you can do other than nothing. And the problem is, it’s not just Ghostbusters. It’s Men in Black. It’s Spider-Man(Pre 2017). It’s the constant incompetence of a company that is always following trends and not setting them.

Before the reboot Sony had 4 Ghostbusters items they could release on DVD/Blu Ray. Let us examine how well they did.

Ghostbusters: Generally pretty good, not a great initial blu ray but they fixed it, decent special features from the first DVD. Nothing much after that. An updated commentary track with Aykroyd, Hudson, Special effects crew might’ve been nice. A full length making of might’ve been nice. (Grade: B+)

Ghostbusters 2: Not a single special feature on any DVD release(beyond a trailer & 2 RGB episodes), a belated blu ray release with no commentary or “making of”. (Grade: D+)

Real Ghostbusters: Now this was a great set! Amazing special features, great box art, steel books. Sony did an AMAZING Job. But wait. That wasn’t Sony. No. Sony didn’t give a shit. So an *infomercial company* took it upon themselves to release Real Ghostbusters on DVD. Time life. (Grade: A- For Time Life. D- For Sony)

Extreme Ghostbusters: Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Unless you live in Europe in which case you get a Volume of episodes(Grade F)

So that’s 4 releases, only 1 of which Sony managed to get right. That’s a shameful record.

The final conclusion you get really is either Sony doesn't have the money to play with the other big boys of the movie/television industry, or doesn't have the ambition. Either way, the more years pass, the more clear it becomes they never should've diversified beyond producing electronics.

Another Carrie Coon interview from mid-September I think. One interesting quote
https://theplaylist.net/carrie-coon-nes ... -20200917/
Of course. I can tell you that I think that Jason Reitman is absolutely the best person to continue this story. He was a boy on that set! And to be part of that symmetry, to watch that come full circle, is really moving because my son was on set with the Ghostbusters and all the puppetry and things. One of the things that Jason did that was so wonderful is that there’s some really old school filmmaking happening in that film. It’s artisans. It’s puppetry. It’s the old school way. My husband always jokes, “I want to see a zipper on a suit in a monster movie!” And there are zippers on suits in this one. That was so much fun! And, as an actor, I can’t tell you how much more satisfying it is to have some dry ice instead of a big green screen. It really matters! It feeds the imagination!

Agreed. Im sure if Columbia was able to make the bigger decisions we would have more Gb media throughout the years.

But lets remember when Coke first bought it..they didn’t even want to invest the first film and go as far as wanting to cancel it stating “its just a special effects comedy..those never make any money”

Then im sure things worsened for Columbia (creatively speaking) once Sony bought it in 89 (after gb2) ..in the 90s they were too busy trying to consume every 3rd party sub division of Columbia and tristar than focusing on producing content and merch. So thats why all we got was an easter egged, channel surf and you miss it, XGB in 97 and then gb goes poof for another 10 years.

They had a huge hit with MIB but barely managed to do anything with it, (the toon was good and became a moderate hit) i was a huge fan but it seemed like merch and franchising for it was a struggle, i remember having to dig for the action figures (which were crap)

Just the old tale of when the greedy cigar chompers outnumber the creatives.

Seems that they finally opened their eyes with what kinda IP ghostbusters is in the past 15 or so years.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

As a side note, I always find it pretty funny when Sony movies have their characters use strictly Sony devices that no one really uses in reality. Casino Royale is especially funny in this regard. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone use a Sony laptop except James Bond. Or when James Bond is looking at security footage he’s viewing it on a Sony Blu Ray player. I always enjoy funny little things like that in movies where you just know the filmmaker had no choice in the matter. My favourite product placement ever though has to be in the first Transformer movie. A character is taking a memory card out of a computer & casually tips it up so the audience reads that it’s a “Panasonic” memory card lol.

It's like in Cobra Kai when everyone is using Sony Ericsson Phones. I don't know a single person that has one of those.

I agree with everyone about Sony mismanaging their IPs. However, Cobra Kai has been a hit. Let's hope Afterlife is able to do what Cobra Kai does so well - blends the past with the present, without it feeling like nostalgia for nostalgia's sake.

In terms of managing RichardLess' expectations - the early Simpsons hasn't been remastered in HD so I doubt RGB or EGB are going that way any time soon.

It might be possible for them to feed them through some software to at least clean them up in SD, so I agree it is disappointing we haven't seen an English/US Blu-ray re-release of RGB - even in Standard Definition, and a full Extreme GB release over the last decade, especially given both were removed from streaming services... I don't know how I'd view Extreme GB now.

I am extremely happy I purchased the Time Life set - we should be thankful we got that I suppose.

Even if I haven't fully plowed through my MonsterMedia bootleg Bluray of Extreme, I'd definitely want to see a legitimate release. US only had three two-episode VHS tapes in crap quality due to EP recording. Reigons 2 and 4 got a DVD with 13 episodes and never followed up, got released for no reason especially considering the lack of Volume 2 or 3 to compensate. iTunes in Europe have three volumes with a total of 17 episodes. Amazon Prime in the UK has the 40 episodes, and it's Hulu in the US. I don't think it would be ideal to have to pay for a subscription service just to suffice a long unfilled gap of interest.

A 2 or 3 disc Blu-ray and/or 4 or 5 disc DVD package would suffice everyone needing it (hell even a 1 disc 4KUHD release even if it sounds overkill). Give it as much special features as needed, whether it's just those Fil Barlow sketches posted on his Patreon or something big like the featurettes from the TimeLife RGB set, same with music + effects tracks even if unlikely. That preview on that Second Jungle Book/Annie tape also shows potential (there's even a YT vid out there with that trailer in the best quality I can imagine, https://youtu.be/GzYG1jOWPk0).

As for Afterlife's second trailer, I have no idea if Fall still seems valid. December would give a decent time distance between movie and trailer unless something happens again. Also the PulseCon presentation was kind of lame so I can't really say being a bit disappointed would be silly.

So, I decided to ventured out from my mountain stronghold and visit the big city (Fresno, CA) and see if anyone out there was still alive. I saw a lot of empty stores and eateries, but this is the most sad thing I saw all day.

What a strange world we live in... Can't believe we can ride a bus, fly in a plane, eat outside, shop at Costco, Home Depot, Walmart and Target, but we can't be trusted to sit close to each other and enjoy the cinema which helps release the day to day drudge we have to wade through week after week, month after month.

They removed this from Prime recently. Hopefully they re-upload it.

For now Apple and Amazon both have the 17-18 episode "Season 1" for a few quid.
Oh. Hmm. The same small amount of episodes is on the UK Google Play as spotted in a very recent google search. Not sure what other countries have a similar episode count. But hey, if that GB1&2 35th Anniversary steelbook can have region free discs, a proper physical release of this show should do the same. It'll make the UK Ghostheads feel good, same with those from around the world who managed to properly see it.

Oh yeah, my dad actually had a Vaio, and it was great until the motherboard eventually died... I'm admittedly a bit of a Sony guy. I mainly buy their cameras, but the Walkman mp3 player is my favorite type of mp3 player, because it actually has buttons! I can't be bothered with touchscreens. I like the Walkman more than the iPod classic, since the iPod classic had that circular wheel that wasn't very functional/sensitive, at least compared to the Walkman's button navigation.

I take it you don’t have Disney+? Because the Simpsons has most definitely been remastered in HD. Every single episode. And it has been for quite some time. There was a big controversy over Fox screwing with the aspect ratio to make the HD version 16x9. Luckily Disney+ came along & actually gives you an option to switch to 4x3.

RGB in HD would be nice, and I think an HD conversion of EGB is done already. I seem to remember them being in HD when the show was on Amazon Prime. However RGB seems unlikely since they’d need to find the 16mm prints(or 35mm). I don’t know if they have all those or not.

It could be a catch & kill. They might not want people knowing the full story about how complicit Ivan Reitman was(something I just learned about on this forum the other day) was in the “I want a new drug” plagiarism. Or maybe it sheds some new evidence on the matter and they’ll release it. But if it contains all the info we know so far? I wonder if we will ever see this documentary. Disney does this from time to time. They outbid other studios on spec scripts that don’t show Walt Disney in the light they feel comfortable with.

The thing is...they did a lot of this stuff! This started because you were talking about "Extreme Ghostbusters," so they tried a new TV series and it wasn't successful, and the "Batman: Animated Series" movies that were released were off the success of the animated series, so there was still an impetus for the studio to fund those films. I'm pretty sure I saw Ghostbusters in theaters in 2009, which marked the same 25th anniversary milestone that Universal chose for Back to the Future. I don't recall an ET re-release on the 25th anniversary, because they chose the 20th anniversary. I don't think most convention presences are generally funded by the studio. if you mean the cast, then that's up to the cast, and if you mean fan groups that generally seems to be up to the fan groups. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's not like the 501st Legion gets paid by Lucasfilm to go to conventions...
RichardLess wrote: September 28th, 2020, 1:29 amAnd the problem is, it’s not just Ghostbusters. It’s Men in Black.
They did actually do books for Men in Black, so that's one thing they did in addition. There was an animated series that seemed popular, there were toys for the animated series -- again, they actually seem to have basically done the things you're accusing them of not having done.

As for your argument about Ghostbusters on home video:

Since the beginning of the DVD era, Sony has put out ten editions of Ghostbusters, and six editions of Ghostbusters II (several of which are releases that contain both movies). Again, you might have your personal nitpicks with those editions, but I don't think that's the same as Sony not doing right by the movies, and if we're talking about keeping the IP alive in the view of the public, I've never heard anyone say, "that great special edition really reminded me that that property existed," nor do I think the things that they've put out were incapable of accomplishing that, if there were people who felt that way. The first DVD was a packed special edition that has one of the largest compilations of content from the DVD era, they added some more stuff the first time it came to Blu-ray, they remastered it in 4K and put it out on both Blu-ray and 4K and added more stuff, and the second time it came out on 4K they found even more material. It's certainly fair to say it took a long time to get a special edition of Ghostbusters II, but it's also fair to say that that is not nearly as popular of a movie than the original, and that the treatment that it got is not unusual for comedy sequels with similar reputations.

I will admit, I am surprised that there is no standard, mass-market complete series DVD of "The Real Ghostbusters," but it is also common for popular animated television shows from the 1980s to be sub-licensed to other labels, so the fact that they handed it off to Time-Life is, again, not particularly surprising. I also think it's unusual to hold the fact that they sublicensed it to Time-Life against them when that was a beautiful set that looked great and had a lot of effort put into it. When companies license out movies for special editions through Shout! Factory and Arrow, I don't hear fans of those movies complaining.

I had an idea that it'd be funny if the song shows up in an unexpected, diegetic way when the kids find the boombox that Ray and Winston use at the beginning of GBII.

There was also a really great line on the AMC splash page that said Afterlife would tie together the events of the first two movies! "Sony Pictures launched the first official look at the new film on December 2, 2019, and with it established not only the new group of central protagonists that the story will follow, but also the mystery at the center of the plot, and how everything will link back to the events featured in both GHOSTBUSTERS and GHOSTBUSTERS II."

I think we're due some nice visual references too, like a rusty slimeblower, for instance. I feel that the logo from II may show up too, at some point. The Ectomobile is still a mystery I've thought long about. If ghosts haven't been seen in 30 years was GB, Inc. around long enough after GBII to revert the car, or will it be established, finally, that there were two cars all along?

Bill & Ted Face the Music did a great job in honoring the first two movies, and I'm 100% sure it'll be the same for Afterlife.
